Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Saint Anselm, 73-68

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball team lost to Saint Anselm, 73-68, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Manchester, N.H. With the loss, Southern dropped to 13-6 overall and 8-3 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm improved to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play.

Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) led the Owls with a double-double after totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds, as well as a block. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had 21 points, with eight assists and seven rebounds while Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) had 19 points and seven boards.

After trading baskets over the game's opening minutes, Saint Anselm broke a 6-6 tie to go on an 8-0 run and take a 14-6 lead. Southern chipped away before the Hawks pushed their lead to nine points, 24-15, with 10:10 to go before the half. The Owls countered with an 8-0 run of their own, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Silvera, to pull within a point, 24-23. Saint A's threatened to pull away again as they took a 40-33 lead on a three-pointer with just under three minutes to go, but the Owls used back-to-back buckets by Diarra and Coleman in the last 40 seconds to send the game to halftime with Saint Anselm lead by three, 40-37.

Saint A's opened the second half with a 9-4 run to take a 49-41 lead with 16:28 to play. Southern then outscored the Hawks, 16-5, over the next eight minutes to take a three-point lead with 8:23 to play.  With the Owls leading by one with 6:26 on the clock, a foul on a three-pointer put Saint Anselm at the line, where it converted on three-straight to take a 63-61, and hold on down the stretch for the win.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 24 when it travels to Southern New Hampshire for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
