SCSU Men's Basketball Lose Nail-Biter To SNHU, 65-64

-

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost a nail-biter at Southern New Hampshire, 65-64, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Manchester, N.H. With the loss, Southern Connecticut dropped to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the NE10 while SNHU improved to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in NE10 play.

Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) had a team-high 19 points with six rebounds while connecting on three three-pointers in the game. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) flirted with a triple double, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as well as four steals while Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) totaled 11 points and five rebounds.

After trading baskets over the first few minutes, Southern put together an 9-2 run that saw them take a 15-8 lead, highlighted by six points from Coleman. Silvera knocked down a three-pointer to give Southern and eight-point lead, 24-16, with seven minutes until intermission. After a seven-point run by SNHU that cut Southern's lead to 24-23, the Owls responded with an eight-point run of their own to give them a nine-point lead, 32-23, with just under three minutes to play in the half. They would maintain the lead and head into the break leading 36-29.

The Penmen engineered a 13-6 run out of the break to tie the game at 42-42 with 13:30 to play. After playing even to a 49-49 tie over the next several minutes, SNHU converted on a free throw after a basket and then scored again on their next possession to take a five-point lead, 54-49, with 8:45 to play. The Owls hit three-straight three-pointers to counter a pair of baskets by Southern New Hampshire to tie it again at 58-58.

Southern took a four-point lead, 62-58, on a pair of layups by Sean James and Cherif Diarra, but Southern New Hampshire tied it and took a two-point lead, 64-62, before Silvera converted on a pair of free throws to knot the game at 64-64. In the end, it was a free throw that did the Owls in with 1:10 to play that sealed the win for Southern New Hampshire. The Owls came up with a rebound on the defensive end, and won a jump ball, to give them a final look with 14.7 seconds remaining. Coleman drove and took a shot, in heavy traffic, in the paint, but the rebound couldn't be handled by the Owls as the Penmen took the win at home.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when it hosts Bentley in a NE10 matchup at James Moore Field House at 3:30 p.m.
