SCSU Men's Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Battle To No. 14 Bentley, 72-67

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost a hard-fought battle against No. 14 Bentley, 72-67, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, Southern dropped to 13-8 overall and 8-5 in the NE10 while Bentley improved to 17-2 overall and 12-2 in conference play.

Sean James (East Hartford, Conn.) led all scorers with 27 points, while also grabbing a team-leading seven rebounds, after hitting 7-of-14 from three-point range. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had 11 points, six assists and six steals while Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) tallied 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

In a close battle that featured five ties and five lead changes, Southern refused to go away against the nationally-ranked Falcons. After scoring the game's first five points, Southern lost the early lead after a 10-3 run by Bentley that gave them a 10-8 lead. Both teams would go back and fourth to a 13-13 tie before Bentley pushed it's lead to 10 with a 16-6 run as they lead 29-19 with 6:07 to play in the first half.

Southern countered with a 13-3 run to end the half within a point of the Falcons, 32-31. James was lights-out in the first 20 minutes to the tune of 17 points while hitting 5-of-7 from three-point range. After Bentley scored on its first possession of the second half, it was a James three-pointer that tied it at 34-34. Through the first 10 minutes of the second half, the back and forth continued as another James three-pointer lifted Southern to within a basket, 50-48.

Bentley countered with an 11-4 run to take a 61-52. It would increase its lead its largest of the second half, 69-59, with 2:16 left in the game. Southern used an eight-point run to cut into Bentley's lead and pull within two points, 69-67, with a minute to play. Down the stretch, Southern missed its final five shots as Bentley sealed the win, 72-67.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 31 when it hosts Georgian Court for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
