SCSU Men's Basketball Wins 7th Straight, 75-66 At Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball ran its winning streak to seven games with a 75-66 win at Franklin Pierce. Win the win, Southern improves to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the Northeast 10 Conference while Franklin Pierce drops to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play. It was also the Owls' fourth-straight NE10 win, to date.

Owls' senior Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) led the Owls with 20 points with 14 coming in the second half as the Owls mounted a late comeback. Coleman was one of five different Owls to score in double figures, while Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) finished with 14 points, all coming in the first half. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had 11 points and nine rebounds with two blocks. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had 10 points and seven steals.

Southern opened with a 13-3 run over the game's first four minutes. Reigning NE10 Player of the Week Sean James caught fire early, knocking down four-straight three-pointers, with the last giving Southern a 22-8 lead with 13 minutes to play in the half. Franklin Pierce responded with a 13-2 run that cut Southern's lead to three points, 26-23, with seven minutes to play.

Both teams continued to trade baskets before FPU's Sean Bresnan banged home a three-pointer with just under four minutes to play to give the Ravens their first lead of the game, 30-28. It would ultimately spell a 24-6 run for Franklin Pierce as they took a 32-28 lead before the Owls held on in the closing minutes to head into the half trailing by a hoop, 35-33, thanks to a put-back dunk by Kazell Stewart with time expiring.

Southern opened the second half with an 11-0 run to take a 44-35 lead. Franklin Pierce countered with a 12-4 run to pull within a point, 48-47, with 12:20 to play. Both teams would trade runs again before Pierce's Brandon Kolek knocked down a three-pointer with seven minutes to go to tie it at 59-59.

Zack Penn then scored on back-to-back possessions before Coleman took over the game. The Owls' senior and leading active scorer poured in 14 points down the stretch as the Owls outscored Franklin Pierce, 16-7, down the stretch. Coleman scored eight-straight points for the Owls, including a pair of three-pointers, and would then score four points in the final two minutes of play to seal off the Owls' win.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Assumption on Saturday, Jan. 10 for a 3 p.m. NE10 matchup. Southern will return home on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to host Saint Michael's at 3 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
