SCSU Men's Basketball Wins 8th Straight, Downs Assumption 66-64

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball held on to defeat Assumption, 66-64, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Worcester, Mass. The Owls extended their winning streak to eight games – its longest since the 2018-19 season, while also winning for the 10th time in their last 11 games. Southern is now 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) put on a show for his hometown crowd as he totaled 22 points, with 13 coming in the second half, with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) had 15 points while Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored nine of his 11 points in the second half. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had a game-high 10 rebounds with six points.

Both teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of the game before Assumption used an 8-0 run to jump out to a 17-9 lead. Southern responded with an 12-2 run to take a 21-19 lead with five minutes to play. Sean James and Logan Bagshaw both knocked down three-pointers in the run to key the Owls run. Both teams played even for the remainder of the half as the Owls held a 28-26 lead at the break.

Silvera led the Owls in the first half, filling the box score to the tune of nine points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Sean James also dropped in nine points, while eight different players scored for the Owls in the first half.

The second half saw Silvera explode for eight points in a 12-3 run that gave Southern a 40-29 lead, five minutes into the second half. The Owls cooled off soon after that, as Assumption used 15-4 run to tie the game at 42-42. The Greyhounds took their largest lead of the half, 46-43, with 8:21 to go after outscoring Southern, 17-3, in seven-minute span.

Trailing, 49-46, Southern used a 12-4 run to take a 58-53 lead that saw James tie the game, 53-53, on a huge three-pointer with just over five minutes to play.  Assumption bounced back with an 7-3 run to tie the game at 60-60 with just under two minutes left in regulation. Controlling play, and with the Greyhounds in the double bonus, Southern converted on 8-of-10 from the free throw line to hold on for the win.

Southern is back in action when they host Saint Michael's on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. at James Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.
