NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's soccer saw their matchup against Assumption end in a 4-0 win in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Assumption. With the win, the Owls moved to 3-7-2 overall and 2-5- in NE10 play while Assumption went to 3-6-4 overall and 2-2-3 in the NE10.
Umberto Catale, Yannick Hilpert, Alex Da Cunha and Zachary Tuccitto scored for the Owls, while Jalen Jean picked up two assists. Southern picked up their first win since Sep. 16. Devin Juan had three saves for the shutout.
With 17:50 left to go in the first half, the Owls opened the scoring as Zico Groeneveld went to the corner. Groenveld's corner ended up loose in the box and found the foot of Jacob Rose. Rose put a shot on goal, which was blocked by Assumption. Catale fielded the ball off the block and put it past the outstretched keeper into the top right corner.
With the Owls up 1-0, they would continue to strike. With 5:58 left in the half, the ball found Ozar Razo in the middle of the field, he passed it to Jalen Jean on the far sideline. Jean took a dribble, sent a long pass into the box which found the head of Hilpert for a goal which brought the score to 2-0.
The Owls scoring would not end after the first half, with 29:54 left in the game Alex Da Cunha added another goal to the Owls lead. Da Cunha's goal came off a corner from Groeneveld. Groenveld's corner bounced out of the box, and he received the rebound. From there, he passed it over the head of his defender to Jean. Jean received the ball and immediately fired it into the box where Da Cunha jumped up and headed it into the goal past the keeper, which expanded the Owls lead to 3-0.
Just over 18 minutes later, the Owls added another goal to their already comfortable advantage. Catale sent a long pass down the sideline looking for Tuccitto. The Assumption goalkeeper came up to stop the ball, but the ball rolled past him. Tuccitto received the pass past the goalkeeper and put it in for an easy goal which extended the lead to 4-0.
Southern is back in action when it takes on Southern New Hampshire university a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field on Saturday, October 21 at 2 p.m.
