SCSU Men's Soccer Tops SNHU, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's soccer defeated Southern New Hampshire, 3-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved to 4-7-2 overall and 3-5 in the NE10 while SNHU dropped to 7-3-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.
 
Yannick Hilpert scored twice to lead the Owls while Omar Razo scored the game-winner. Umberto Catale and David Lops had assists on Hilpert's goals while Razo's came off a rebound on a corner. In goal, Devin Juan stopped seven of SNHU's eight shots on goal.
 
Lops set up the first goal when he took control of the ball in front of the Penmen's bench. He made a move on a Penmen defender and then took off into the box, centering a pass to Hilpert for the one-touch and game's first goal.
 
SNHU answered in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Owls then regained the lead on a corner set when Omar Razo picked up a loose ball off of his initial shot off the crossbar and headed it past the Penmen's keeper to give Southern a 2-1 lead.
 
With five minutes to go, Umberto Catale stripped a Penmen midfielder of the ball at midfield and took off down the sideline. Spying Hilpert trailing the play, Catale carried the ball into the box and slid a pass to Hilpert. Hilpert beat a defender than then blasted his second goal of the game to seal the win.
 
Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 25 when it hosts American International at Jess Dow Field at 7 p.m.
