SCSU Football Tops Post, 35-14

WATERBURY, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football rolled to a 35-14 win at Post to improve to 3-6 on the season while Post dropped to 1-7. E'lijah Gray led the Owls offense with 217 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown as he became the first SCSU running back to rush for 200 yards in a game since Vaughn Magee totaled 297 yards in a game on Sept. 29, 2012.

Gray has been on a tear as of late, totaling 476 yards and four touchdowns in his last three games. For the year, he's totaled 766 yards rushing with five touchdowns.

Tylon Papallo had eight catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns, as well as a two-point conversion. Papallo has now topped 100 yards in four-straight games while he also has seven touchdowns in his last five starts. Papallo stands at 868 yards through nine games with eight touchdown passes.  Ryan Soules also had a pair of touchdown catches while Keith Ridley was 19-for-27 for 2017 with four touchdown passes.

On defense, Hasan Dominick had six tackles and an interception while Joe Digello had four tackles, two sacks and an interception. Youseff Gamel had three sacks for the Owls.

Post opened the game with the ball before Joenel Figueroa came up with his team-leading fourth interception of the season on the third play of the game. The Eagles would get the ball back after Ridley was picked off but Watson and Gamel came up with sacks on Post's next possession to force the punt. After a 22-yard punt return by Papallo, Ridley hooked up with his star receiver with a 21-yard run by Gray sandwiched in to move the Owls inside the Post 10-yard line. From there, Gray got the Owls on the board with an eight-yard touchdown run.

Gray continued to punish the Eagles' defense, highlighted by a 53-yard run on the Owls' next possession that led to a 12-yard touchdown strike from Ridley to Soules to make it 13-0. Post ended up scoring to make it 13-7 through the first quarter.

With the ball to start the second quarter, the Owls ate over 12 minutes off the clock before Ridley connected with Soules again to give Southern a 19-7 lead, followed by a two-point conversion to Papallo to give Southern a 21-7 lead. On that drive, Ridley was 8-for-9 for 54 yards while connecting with five different receivers while freshman Kieran Falzon banged for 31 yards on the ground.

With the ball and less than two minutes on the clock, Ridley hooked up with Luke Gadson on a 19-yard reception before a series of penalties at the end of the half gave the Owls the ball with :00.2 seconds on the clock. Ridley tossed the long ball from Post's 45-yard line before Papallo won the jump ball in the end zone to give Southern a 28-7 lead heading into the break.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, Ridley hooked up with Papallo for the second time in the game, this time on a 10-yard touchdown pass to the back of the end zone as he scrambled out of the pocket.

After a weekend off, Southern will conclude the 2023 season next weekend when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
