NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut volleyball beat Saint Michael's College, 3-2, in a five-set thriller in an NE10 matchup on Friday night at Pelz Gym. Southern improved to an overall record of 14-16 and an NE10 record of 2-8, while Saint Michael's dropped to an overall record of 6-11, and an NE10 record of 4-6.
In the first set, Southern jumped to an early lead and took the set with a scoreline of 25-17. In the second, the Owls dominated on the court and got the second set victory of 25-16 over the Purple Knights. However, Saint Michael's fought back in the third set, with a scoreline of 25-16. In the fourth, both teams went back-and-forth but the Purple Knights pulled away with the fourth set win of 25-18. In the fifth, the Owls began the set with a close lead then Saint Michael's tied things up. Southern worked hard to get their lead back as the Purple Knights kept inching closer. Nevertheless, the Owls powered through and got the victory with a scoreline of 15-12, to win the match.
Sara Enright led the team with 14 kills, as
Carissa Michel followed behind with 11 kills and
Ahunna James racked up eight kills against Saint Michael's. James recorded a team-best of 11 digs, as both Enright and Michel had nine of their own.
Michel had three blocks as
Ahunna James and
Sarah Stark each had two blocks. Enright led the team with five service aces, while
Lily Miller and
Ahunna James recorded two service aces against the Purple Knights.
Lily Miller had a season-best of 38 assists, as
Aubrey Villena had two assists and
Carissa Michel added an assist of her own.
Volleyball returns to action in their last match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Pelz Gym against NE10 opponent, Saint Anselm College.
