Weekly Preview: SCSU Cross Country Heads To National Championships, Basketball Opens NE10 Play

It's NCAA Championship week as the SCSU Men's and Women's Cross Country teams travel to Joplin, Mo. to compete in the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18.
 
The Owls are coming off a sweep of both the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championships, which were a repeat of last season for the men's program and firsts for women's cross country.
 
Swimming & Diving is back in action with a meet on the road at Worcester Polytechnic while men's and women's basketball both play twice this week, with both games on the road.

Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

Men's Notes: Southern Connecticut men's cross country won its second-straight NCAA Division II East Regional as they placed five student-athletes in the top 11 to defeat Roberts Wesleyan, 32-42. Southern led at each marker but led Roberts Wesleyan and Franklin Pierce for the duration of the race. Jonathan Volpe, Sean Barkasy, William Lamburn, Jeremy Rivera and Owen Gagne filled in the top 11 finishes while Sophonias Dires and Luca Cazzaniga also finished in the top 25 to earn All-Region honors … The men's program successfully defended its NE10 Championship, winning for the second-straight year and for the third time since 2018. Jonathan Volpe finished second overall with a time of 25:11.8. Jeremy Rivera finished in fourth place with a time of 25:30.60. Owen Gagne finished in fifth place with a time of 25:31.30. William Lamburn finished in ninth place with a time of 25:43.80. Sean Barkasy finished in 11th place with a time of 25:51.00. Sophonias Dires finished in 16th place with a time of 26:14.50. Luca Cazzaniga finished in 17th place with a time of 26:17.00. Southern is currently the top ranked team in the USTFCCCA East Regional rankings … Southern Connecticut sophomore Jeremy Rivera and head coach John Wallin, were named the Northeast-10 Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year and Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, respectively. The Owls had 12 runners in total on the men's and women's cross country teams earn NE10 All-Conference awards, as released by the NE10 on Thursday, Nov. 9 …Jeremy Rivera is the sixth Owl in Southern Connecticut's history to be named the Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year. In addition, Rivera earned NE10 First Team honors for his strong performance at the championships. He finished fourth at the NE10 Conference Championships with a time of 25:30.60. At the UMass Dartmouth Invitational, he crossed the finish line with a time of 26:19.16, to help the Owls finish in sixth place … Head Coach John Wallin was named Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, for the third time in his career and in back-to-back seasons. Wallin received the honor last season when the Owls placed first in the 2022 NE10 Conference Championships.
 
Women's Notes: The Southern Connecticut State University women's cross country team clinched first place at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023 at Stanley Park, hosted by American International College. Southern had five runners finish in the top 20 and had a total of 54 points to get the victory. The Owls placed five student-athletes – Brianna Greco, Courtney Henchcliffe, Megan Whitnell, PJ Dauphinais and Emilie Noreika - in the top 20 of the 94-runner field, earning All-NE10 honors while Greco, Henchliffe and Whitnell placed in the top 10. Briana Grecco finished sixth overall with a time of 22:36.70. Courtney Henchcliffe finished in ninth place with a time of 23:02.20. Megan Whitnell finished in 10th place with a time of 23:04.80. PJ Dauphinais finished in 12th place with a time of 23:07.80. Emilie Noreika finished in 17th place with a time of 23:28.00. Abigail Bajorek  finished in 22nd place with a time of 24:18.30. Sarah Johnson finished in 51st place with a time of 27:45.40. The women are also the top ranked team in the USTFCCCA East Regional ranking. … women's cross country won the 2023 NCAA Division II East Regional, capturing its first title in program history. The Owls placed five runners in the top 20 for 58 points while edging Roberts Wesleyan in second place with 70. With the regional championship, the Owls automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship on Nov. 18. Briana Grecco, Emilie Noreika, Megan Whitnell, P.J. Dauphinais and Courtney Henchliffe all earned NCAA Division II All-Region honors after finishing in the top 25 of the 117-runner field. It is Grecco's second-straight All-Region honor after also earning 2022 honors.

The Owls finished the SCSU Tip-Off Classic with a win against Georgian Court, 78-54, and a loss to Mercy, 53-43. Against Georgian Court, Katie Williamson and Makenzie Helms recorded their first double-doubles of the season against the Lions. Williamson had a team-best of 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Helms scored 11 points, had 10 assists and two steals. Hope Fox added 12 points of her own, caught five rebounds, had three steals and had two assists. In addition, Fox shot 100% from the free-throw line. Jillian Martin scored 11 points and was three-for-four from the three-point line, which was a team best for the Owls. Ashley Evans added eight points, a team-best of four blocks an assist against Georgian Court … Against Mercy, Delaney Haines scored a team-high 19 points after converting on 5-of-10 from three-point range, and also had four steals. Hope Fox led Southern with 10 rebounds to go along with five assists, three steals and three points while Ashley Evans had eight points. Katie Williamson also finished with six points, six rebounds and four assists.
 
Notes: Through two games, Haines leads the team with 12 points per game, as well as five three-pointers … Williamson checks in with 10 points and nine rebounds per game as well as 3.5 assists … Hope Fox is averaging 7.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game … Ashley Evans is averaging 8.0 points and 2.5 blocks per contest … Makenzie Helms checks in with 7.5 points and 5.5 assists per contest.

SCSU Men's Basketball will face Mercy in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 15 on the road before heading to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday, Nov. 18 to open Northeast-10 Conference play at Assumption.
 
Notes: This past weekend against UDC, Marty Silvera led the Owls with a game-high 19 points while also logging a full box score with five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Silvera hit 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. First-year Owl Josh McGettigan, who transferred to SCSU from Saint Rose, had 18 points in his Owls' debut after knocking down four three-pointers in the game.

Sean James totaled 12 points, five rebounds and four assists while Cherif Diarra grabbed 15 rebounds and had three blocks … Against Bridgeport, Dominant performances from Josh McGettigan, Marty Silvera, and Kazell Stewart helped the Owls finish with the four point victory over the Purple Knights. Kazell Stewart, the Owls leading scorer finished with a career high 26 points accompanied by seven rebounds. Josh McGettigan, in his second game with the Owls finished second in scoring alongside Marty Silvera, both netting 19 points each. Clutch free throws from both Sean James and Silvera helped the Owls put away this tough road battle.

SCSU Swimming & Diving will be back in action for the first time since Nov. 4 when they head to Worcester, Mass. to compete against WPI on Friday, Nov. 17. at 6 p.m.
 
Men's Notes: Dylan Prescher was named to the NE10 Honor Roll on Nov. 7. In a dual meet against Wagner, Dylan Prescher finished second with a time of 10:04.96 in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle event and also finished second in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:54.10.
 
Women's Notes: For the second time of the season Hailey Nyquist was named NE10 swimmer of the week. In a tri meet against CCSU and Wagner, Nyquist posted a time of 58.41 in the 100 Backstroke, a time of 2:13.11 in the 200 Backstroke and a time of 59.74 in the 100 Butterfly. She also swam a 27.69 split as the lead in the 200 Medley Relay … Arianna Arturi was also named to the NE10 weekly honor roll for week four. Against CCSU and Wagner, Arturi posted a time of 1:58.62 in the 200 Free and a time of 54.57 in the 100 Free before swimming a 25.33 split in the 200 Freestyle Relay event.
