SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost its Northeast-10 Conference opener at Assumption, 83-63, in Worcester, Mass. The Owls move to 3-1 overall and open their NE10 slate at 0-1 while Assumption improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in NE10 play.
 
Sean James led the Owls with 17 points after hitting on 5-of-11 from three-point range. Cherif Diarra totaled 14 points with four offensive rebounds while Josh McGettigan had 13 points and seven rebounds. Marty Silvera had nine points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals.


 
Southern fell behind early as the Greyhounds held the largest lead of the first half, 20-9, with 12:34 to play. The Owls outscored Assumption, 17-12, over the next seven minutes to pull within four points, 30-26, behind three, three-pointers from James who scored a team-best 12 points in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Owls hit three of their next five shots, including two from long range, to pull within three points, 34-31, with two minutes to play in the half. Assumption closed the half with a 6-3 run to take a 40-34 lead into the break.
 
Southern spread the scoring around in the first half, as Kazell Stewart and McGettigan both had seven while Diarra totaled five in the first frame. It was Silvera serving as the facilitator with eight assists on 12 Owls' field goals in the first 20 minutes.
 
The second half opened up similarly to the first half, with Assumption outscoring the Owls, 24-11, to take a 64-45 lead with 11:49 to go in the first half. Assumption went on to take a 70-51 lead halfway through the first half. They went on to outscore the Owls, 43-29, in the second half en route to a 83-63 win.
 
Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when it hosts Adelphi for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at James Moore Field House.
