#6 SCSU Men's Soccer Tops #3 Adelphi To Advance To NE10 Semifinals

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The sixth-seeded Southern Connecticut men's soccer team upset tournament No. 3 seed Adelphi, 1-0, in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals matchup in Garden City, N.J. The Owls' win on the road was its first NE10 Tournament win since 2017.


 
With No. 7 Southern New Hampshire up-ending No. 2 Bentley, it places the Penmen in New Haven for the NE10 Semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. The longtime rivals will meet in the NE10 tournament for the third time in NE10 history and for the first time since the 2014 NE10 Championship game.

"The effort from the group was tremendous," head coach Kevin Anderson said. "We suffered through some difficult moments and guys came up with some big moments to will the group past a very good Adelphi team. "

 Zico Groenveld scored the game's only goal just minutes into the second half. Ozar Razo threw the ball in from midfield to Matt Surette just above the box. Surette's header found Groenveld streaking through the middle of the field, who put the ball past Adelphi's keeper for a score. 
 
On the other end of the field, Devin Juan put on an all-time performance for the clean sheet. Juan was tested often down the stretch as the Panthers began to press and came away with the five-save shutout. It was Southern's ninth shutout in NE10 tournament play, all-time.
 
In addition to it being the Owls' first tournament win in six years, it's just the second win against Adelphi in four games between the two teams in NE10 tournament history. The Owls had previously lost 11-straight to the Panthers before Saturday night's win.
