SCSU Men's Basketball Rolls To 81-59 Win Against Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball rolled to an 81-59 win against Adelphi in a Northeast 10 Conference game at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 16-9 overall and 10-6 in the NE10 while Adelphi dropped to 11-15 overall and 5-13 in conference play.

Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) turned in his third-straight double-double performance after totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding five assists. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) and Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) also scored 16 points, each, while Silvera finished with six assists and five steals. Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Me.) came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points while going 3-for-4 from three-point range.

As a team, Southern has now won three of their last four games while improving to 9-2 on its home court, including wins in eight of its last nine game at James Moore Field House. The Owls forced 17 turnovers, totaling 10 steals, while outrebounding Adelphi, 45-32, including 14 offensive rebounds that turned into 12 second chance points. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) finished with eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds, with five coming on the offensive end.

Southern controlled the score for the entire game. Leading 10-6, Adelphi's Dayshaun Walton knocked down a jumper in the paint to pull Adelphi within a basket, but the Owls used a 12-3 run to take an 11-point lead, 22-11, with 8:19 to go in the first half with Bagshaw scoring on back-to-back possessions to push the Owls lead to double digits for the first time in the game. Southern led by as many as 15 in the first half and took a 13-point lead, 41-28, on a half-court heave by Silvera at the buzzer to end the first half.

Coming out of the break, Southern scored the first six points of the half to take a 19-point lead, 47-28, as Penn scored on back-to-back plays. Adelphi countered with a 13-0 run to cut Southern's lead to six points, 47-41, with 14:15 to play. Southern answered that run with a 10-0 run to push its lead back to 16 points, 57-41, as Coleman scored six points on a pair of layups and two free throws.

Adelphi managed to pull within 13 points, with just under eight minutes to play, but the Owls outscored the Panthers, 17-9, over the games closing minutes to pull out the victory.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when it hosts Franklin Pierce in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Fieldhouse.
