SCSU Baseball Drops Season Opener At Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost its season opener at Lynn, 10-2, in Boca Raton, Fla. The Owls open the year at 0-1 while Lynn improves to 5-2-1 on the season.

Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with two hits, including a two-run single in the eighth inning that accounted for both of Southern's runs. Transfer Matt Smith (South Windsor, Conn.) threw an inning of one-hit, scoreless baseball in relief.

Seeing its first game action of the year after a Winter of indoor workouts, the Owls' offense was quiet to start as the Fighting Knights no-hit Southern's lineup through six innings. In the seventh, Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) led off with a single before he moved over to second on Drewry's first hit of the game. The Owls went in order after Drewry reached base.

In the eighth, Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) walked to start the inning before Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) followed with a base hit and Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) worked a walk to load the bases. After Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) and Goggin were retired, Drewry stroked a two-out, two-run single that plated both of Southern's runs. Lynn answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.) took the loss on the mound after being hit for six runs, four earned, on eight hits over three innings. Tommy Benincaso (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched four innings in relief, also allowing four runs on eight hits. Smith entered in relief of Benincaso in the eighth for his first appearance with the Owls. Benincaso is a transfer from Eastern Connecticut while Smith joined the Owls from Stonehill.

Southern and Lynn will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m.
