SCSU Baseball Tops Lynn, 7-6, For First Win Of 2023 Season

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball picked up its first win of the 2023 season with a 7-6 victory against Lynn University in Boca Rotan, Fla. With the win, the Owls improve to 1-1 on the year while Lynn drops to 5-3-1 overall.

Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also had two hits and a run scored. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) and Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) both drove in a run and Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) picked up the win in relief. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) also converted his first save of the season.

In the second, Goggin led off with a single and then stole second base. After Jack Drewry flew out and Chad Fedeli grounded out, which moved Goggin to third, Walked reached on an error by Lynn's third baseman that scored Goggin to give Southern a 1-0 lead.

Lynn responded with back-to-back home runs off of starter Steve Phillips to take a 2-1 lead. The two round-trippers were the only blemishes on Phillips' day as he scattered four hits over 3 1/3 before leaving the game in the fourth. Spencer Fox entered the game and pitched 1 2/3 of one-hit, scoreless baseball.

Peter Phillips entered the game in the top of the sixth inning. Seeing his first action of the year, Lynn struck for a pair of runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the seventh, the Owls' bats came alive to push four runs across and stake Phillips with a lead. Walker led off with a single, and then moved to third on an error by the pitcher. After Zach Bedryczuk grounded out, Jake Gruttadauria drove Walker in with a ground ball to second. Sullivan then doubled, followed by a walk by Eng, before Ferrett drove in Sullivan with a base hit. Goggin then drove in Ferrett and Eng with a single to give Southern a 6-4 lead.

Southern added another run in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead. Gruttadauria singled with one out and then moved to second on a passed ball, and third on a wild pitch. After Sullivan walked, and Eng popped out, Sullivan moved into scoring position on another wild pitch. Derrick Jagello worked a walk before Gruttadauria scored on the third wild pitch of the inning to give Southern a three-run lead.

Hughes entered the game in the eighth inning with a three-run lead. Lynn managed to push two runs across to make it 7-6. In the ninth, Hughes retired the first batter he faced before giving up a base hit. That runner was then throw out at second by Sullivan for the second out of the inning. After back-to-back walks, Hughes struck out the final batter of the inning to end the game and give the Owls the win.

Southern will head to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face Staten Island on Friday, Feb. 24, Felician on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Post on Sunday, Feb. 26. The Owls' home opener is set for Saturday, Mar. 4 against Mercy at The Ballpark at SCSU at 12 p.m.
