SCSU Baseball Tops Staten Island, 10-0, Behind Gem From Guarino

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated College of State Island, 10-0, in a non-conference matchup at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the win, Southern Connecticut improves to 2-1 while CSI opens the year at 0-1.

Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.) was in midseason form with a gem against the Dolphins as the second-year Owl spun eight innings of scoreless baseball while scattering four hits. Guarino was dominant after shaking off a two-hit first inning to allow just one baserunner over the next six innings. Guarino retired 10 straight batters before giving up a leadoff hit in the sixth and then settled in to retire the next nine batters he faced.

Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) slammed the door on the Dolphins with a scoreless ninth that featured three strikeouts. Diaz struck out the first batter he faced then gave up a pair of hits. Settled in to a 10-0 lead, Diaz struck out the final two batters of the game.

At the plate, Southern rang up 13 runs on 10 hits. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored highlighted by a two-run single in the ninth. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) were both 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Goggin also scored two runs. Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) both had two hits apiece while Ferrett scored twice.

The Owls scored twice in the second inning on a sacrifice flyball by Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) that scored Ferrett and then on a RBI single by Jagello that brought Goggin home. It was Goggin's two-run triple in the third that gave Southern a 4-0 lead and Sullivan's RBI single scored Zach Bedryczyk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) to push Southern's lead to 5-0.

In the sixth, Sullivan drove in Fedeli on a sacrifice fly before Colin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) singled home Jagello to push the Owls' lead to 7-0. In the ninth, it was Jagello's two-run single that plated two more runs, before he scored from first on an error.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday when they face Felician for a doubleheader set for a 10:30 a.m. start at The Ripken Experience.
