SCSU Women's Lacrosse Rolls To 17-1 Win Against Chestnut Hill In 2023 Season Opener

LAYAYETTE HILL, Pa. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse opened the 2023 season with a 17-1 win against Chestnut Hill in Lafayette, Pa. The Owls' 17 goals are its most since Feb. 29, 2020 against Post while its 16-goal win is its largest since Southern defeated Dominican, 22-4, in its season opener in 2020.

10 different Owls scored in their win against the Griffins, led by hat tricks from Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Kirsten McIntire (Nashua, N.H.). McIntire, a transfer from NCAA Division I Merrimack, also led Southern with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Active leading career goal scorer Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) scored twice while Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.) finished with two goals and one assists. Olivia Richter (Holbrook, N.Y.) also scored two goals in her collegiate debut. In goal, freshman Caelan Connors (Holbrook, N.Y.) stopped six of Chestnut Hill's seven shots on goal for her first career win in her first career game.

Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) scored the first of six goals in the first quarter, followed by a pair of goals from Robbins and 2022 leading goal scorer Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.). McIntire scored twice in the final 4:38 of the quarter, with Rowe also finding the back of the net. McIntire's first goal came from Shaw while Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.) set McIntire up for her second goal.

Southern padded its lead with four goals in the second, powered by Reilly, Rowe, Robbins and McIntire, to head into halftime with a 10-0 lead. The Owls scored 17 unanswered goals before Chestnut Hill got on the scoreboard with a minute left in the game. In the third, Reilly scored her second of the game, followed by back-to-back goals by Richter. Liney White (Madison, Conn.) also scored with a minute to go in the third.

In the fourth, Robbins converted on her third goal of the game before Allie Palmer (Fairfield, Conn.) scored on a pass from Michela Rutigliano (Oyster Bay, N.Y.). Bailey McDermott (Orange, Conn.), also making her collegiate debut, scored the Owls' final goal.  

For Karlie Rowe, the Owls' senior now has 95 career goals, which ranks seventh all-time, and 116 points, which ranks sixth all-time. For Southern, the last time it had two players score three goals in a game was Apr. 2, 2022 when Rowe (4) and Takacs (5) did it against Franklin Pierce.

Southern will play its first home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Molloy at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
