NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse beat Molloy in a 12-11 non-conference win in New Haven, Conn. on a snowy Saturday afternoon. The Owls are 2-0 on the season and Molloy is 0-2.
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) scored four goals in the win, including the overtime game-winner, while Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and Kirsten McIntire (Nashua, N.H.) each recorded a hat trick. Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.) and Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) rounded out the Owls scorers with one goal apiece while Shaw also recorded four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.) had four draw controls. Hannah Holmes (Colchester, Conn.) led the Owls in ground balls with five.
The scoring began less than a minute into the game where Kirsten McIntire notched her first goal off a pass by Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.). Molloy responded by scoring two consecutive goals in the following ten minutes. McIntire broke the Lions streak with her second goal of the day from an assist by Liney White (Madison, Conn.). Molloy took the upper hand in the first quarter when they scored two more goals to finish out the period, 4-2.
The Owls rose into action in the second quarter to tie up the game by halftime. Molloy started with a goal 39 seconds into the quarter but Southern's Savannah Feinberg responded with a goal four minutes later. Bayleigh Takacs notched the next goal with an assist by Karlie Rowe to make the score 5-4. Molloy attempted to pull away with a goal by Brenna Signorelli, but the Owls responded in scoring fashion when they put the ball in the net two more times by Takacs and Feinberg before the end of the half. The game rolled to a tie at halftime, 6-6.
Southern started the second half by scoring three consecutive goals from Brianna Shaw, Savannah Feinberg and Morgan Reilly as the Owls overtook the Lions, 9-6. With six minutes remaining in the period, Molloy secured a goal off a free position shot. Takacs proceeded to notch her third goal of the match less than 30 seconds later. The final five minutes saw Molloy score again, but not without a response from the Owls when McIntire scored her third goal of the game to finish the period at 11-8.
Molloy stunned Southern in the fourth period when they scored three goals and successfully stopped the Owls from converting any of their five shot attempts. Molloy tied up the game by the closure of 15 minute period and forced the Owls into overtime as the sun began to shine through the snowy clouds.
In overtime, Bayleigh Takacs notched her fourth and final goal of the game to send the Owls to sudden victory, 12-11. Takacs leads the Owls with five goals in two games.
Southern returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 12:00 p.m. when the Owls travel to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley.
