SCSU Baseball Falls To Post, 9-7

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Post, 9-7, in a non-conference matchup at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the loss, Southern dropped to 4-2 overall while Post improved to 6-5 on the year.

Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a two-run single while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) also drove in two runs. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) also had RBI in the game. On the mound, graduate transfer Matt Smith (South Windsor, Conn.) gave up one run on three hits over three innings in relief in his Owls' debut.

Southern struck early with a three-run first inning. After Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) walked and Ferrett reached after getting hit by a pitch, Goggin drew a walk to load the bases. Drewry then singled to score Ferrett and Sullivan to give Southern a 2-0 lead. Derrick Jagello followed with a RBI single to bring Goggin in and give the Owls a three-run lead.

Post broke through with a six-run sixth inning after six of the first seven hitters to come up to the plate that inning had a hit and also scored. The Eagles took a 7-3 lead with a sixth inning home run. In the bottom of the sixth, Jagello, Fedeli and Zach Bedryczuk walked to load the bases. After Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Sullivan were retired, Andrew Eng reached on an error by the Eagles' shortstop, which allowed Jagello to score. Ferrett then followed with a double to score Bedryczuk and Fedeli before Goggin single to bring Eng home and tie the game at 7-7.

In the eighth, Brett Fee (North Branford, Conn.), also making his Owls' debut, retired the first two batters he faced before walking the third. Post's Danny Gill then gave up a triple that brought around the go-ahead run before Post's Jimmy Brennan followed with a base hit to score Gill and give the Eagles the deciding two runs.

The Owls are scheduled to open their home schedule on Saturday, Mar. 4 when they're set to host Mercy at 12 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
