SCSU Baseball Sweeps Mercy, 7-6 and 13-5

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball swept a non-conference doubleheader at Mercy, defeating the Knights 7-6 and 13-5. With the two wins, the Owls improve to 6-2 on the season while Mercy drops to 2-10 on the year.

Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI, as well as four runs scored. Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) also collected three hits, including his second home run of the season in the first game of the twinbill, while driving in three runs. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) had a four-hit game in the second half of the doubleheader.

In the first game, a pitcher's duel turned upside down as both teams combined for 12 runs on 15 hits in the final four innings. For Southern, Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) dazzled for 5 2/3 innings, holding Mercy scoreless on a single hit and holding a 1-0 lead off a Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) home run in the fifth. Mercy tied the game in the sixth, 1-1. Southern regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning after Andrew Eng (Riverwood, N.J.) singled and them moved around the bases on a throwing error and two passed balls, the second of which allowed the Owls' outfielder to score the go-ahead run.

In the bottom half of the inning, Phillips gave up a lead-off triple and then a base hit before being lifted in favor of Spencer Fox (Manchester, Conn.). Mercy got to the Owls' reliever, plating five runs in total to take a 6-2 lead. In the top of the eighth, Southern responded with its own five-run inning to take a 7-6 lead. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) both singled to lead off the inning before Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) scored Jagello with a ground-rule double. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) then drove in Fedeli, with Bedryczuk being put-out, before Collin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) singled to put runners on first and second. After Eng loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch, Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) drove in two runs with a double down the third base line to tie it at 6-6. Izaiah Walker then drove in Eng with the go-ahead, and eventually winning, run on a single to left field.

With the lead in hand, Southern went to Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) in the bottom half of the eighth. Diaz worked quickly, retiring Mercy in order. Diaz would pick up the win in relief before Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) came in to strike out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his third save in as many opportunities for the year.

In the second game, Southern rolled to a 13-5 win after a four-run second and a three-run fifth before plating four in the top of the seventh inning. Billy Sullivan was 4-for-5 in the game with two runs scored while Mason scored four runs after going 1-for-2 with a double and three walks. Eng also had a pair of doubles while driving in three runs while Drewry also drove in three runs in the Owls' win. Bedryczuk also connected on his first home run of the season while scoring three runs in the win.

On the mound, Guarino improved to 2-1 after picking up the win for the second straight game. Guarino gave up five runs in six innings of work before Brett Fee came on in the seventh to close the game. Guarino, despite allowing five runs over the game's first two innings, settled in and blanked the Knights over his final four innings on the hill.

With the game tied at 5-5 after the second inning, the Owls manufactured a run to take the lead. Bedryczuk walked and then moved to third on a double by Sullivan before scoring on a passed ball to give the Owls the lead. In the fifth, Bedryvzuk blasted a one-out home run before Mason walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a double by Eng. Goggin then drove in Eng to give Southern a 9-5 lead.

In the seventh, Sullivan led off with a single for his fourth hit of the game and then moved to third after Mason and Goggin walked. Drewry then ripped a double inside the first base bag to bring two runs around before Jagello singled to score Goggin. Fedeli then drove in Drewry to give Southern a 13-5 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, after Mercy's lead off batter reached on an error, Fee settled in and struck out the next three batters to preserve the Owls' win.

Southern and Mercy will meet again on Tuesday, Mar. 7. The Owls and Knights open Southern Connecticut's home schedule at The Ballpark at SCSU at 3 p.m.
