SCSU Men's Basketball Downs Saint Rose, 78-70

ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Saint Rose, 78-70, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Albany, N.Y. With the win, Southern improved to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in the NE10 while Saint Rose dropped to 9-15 overall and 3-13 in conference play.

For the second straight game, it was the Owls' senior duo of Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) and Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) leading the way for the Owls. Coleman finished with a team-high 21 points, with six rebounds, after hitting on 4-of-8 from three-point range and 7-of-11 from the floor. Penn, coming off his first career 20-point game, turned in his second-straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as he hit on 7-of-12 from the field. Sean James (East Hartford, Conn.) had 15 points, including a 3-for-5 night from three-point range with six assists. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had 12 points and eight rebounds while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had nine points and eight rebounds, as well as three steals to add to his NCAA Division II leading mark.

A tight battle from the jump, Southern opened the game with a 7-2 run before Saint Rose matched it to tie it at 9-9. The Owls responded with an 11-0 run to jump out to a 20-9 lead. Saint Rose would then outscore the Owls, 22-12, to cut the Owls lead to a point, 32-31, with 5:18 to play before playing back and forth over the remainder of the half that saw Southern with a 36-35 lead heading to halftime. Penn led the Owls with 11 points while Coleman totaled 10 and James rallied for nine.

Early in the second half, Saint Rose tied the game at 41-41 just under five minutes into play. Southern used an 11-4 run to take a 52-44 lead with 10:19 on the clock. Saint Rose answered with a 13-4 run to take a 57-56 lead with 5:50 to play. Coleman answered on the next position with a three-pointer from the corner that keyed an 11-2 run for the Owls and give Southern a 67-59 lead with 2:08 to play. As the game went to free throws, Southern converted on 9-of-11 from the charity stripe to hold the Owls' lead and secure the conference win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when it hosts Adelphi at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
