SCSU Baseball Falls To Caldwell, 12-9

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Caldwell, 12-9, in a non-conference matchup in Boca Raton, Fla. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 8-3 overall while Caldwell went to 3-2.

Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning. Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two doubles while Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Caldwell jumped out to an early lead and posted eight runs over the game's first two innings, two of which were unearned. Trailing 8-0, the Owls offense came back to life in the bottom of the second when they ran-out six runs to cut the Cougars lead to 8-6.

Goggin led off with a double before Jack Drewry got on board after being hit by a pitch. Derrick Jagello's ground ball to second was misplayed, allowing Goggin to come around from second. Fedeli then stroked a double to score Drewry as Jagello wen to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zach Bedryczuk.  Sullivan then cleared the bases when he drove in Fedeli before Eng connected on his first nuke of the season to cut Caldwell's lead to two runs.

Owls transfer Matt Smith was stellar in relief as he cooled the Caldwell bats over 3 2/3. Smith gave up a single, unearned run on two hits while striking out three. Brett Fee then came on in relief and logged three one-run innings while striking out six and allowing one hit.

Southern continued to chip away at Caldwell's lead, which grew to 9-6 after plating a run in the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, Fedeli singled and moved to third on a double by Bedryczuk. Colin Mason then grounded out to score Fedeli as Bedryczuk moved to third. After Eng was hit by a pitch, Bedryczuk stole home on the double steal, with Eng being retired in the run down as the Owls pulled within a run.

With Smith dealing on the mound, the Owls tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Ferrett led off the inning with a single before Goggin clubbed his second double of the game. Drewry then grounded out to first to drive in Ferrett and tie the game at 9-9.

In the sixth, Fee came on in relief of Smith, who gave up a lead-off single in the inning. Fee hit the first batter he faced before retiring the next three. In the seventh, Fee continued to cruise through the Caldwell lineup as he struck-out the side to run his streak to six-straight batters retired. That run would extend to nine batters as he worked through the eight, in order.

In the ninth, Fee gave up a lead-off single before giving way to Spencer Fox. Caldwell's first two batters walked before the next batter drove in two runs on a single and the third run of the inning came home on a wild pitch to make it 12-9.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 12 when it faces Alliance for the second-straight day at 2 p.m.
