SCSU Baseball Tops Alliance, 14-3

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Alliance, 14-3, in a non-conference game in Boca Raton, Fla. The Owls improved to 9-3 on the season while Nyack dropped to 1-12 overall.

Colin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) led the Owls with a 2-for-5 day with five RBI while Jake Gruttadauria (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in two runs and scored two more. Zack Healy (Enfield, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a double, a RBI and three runs scored. On the mound Mike Szturma (Beacon Falls, Conn.) picked up the win after a brilliant performance over 5 1/3 innings. Alliance pushed across three unearned runs during Szturma's outing, who gave up seven hits and struck out four. Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) dazzled again out of the bullpen as he went 2 2/3 scoreless innings while allow one hit.

Southern got on the board first when Gruttadauria reached on an error in his first at bat before stealing second. He scored the Owls first run on a ball hit by Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) that was also misplayed. Alliance responded in the third with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Mason drove in his first run of the game with a single that scored Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) to give the Owls a 3-2 edge. Alliance came back again with a run in the next inning before Southern regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Zack Healy doubled and then came around with the go-ahead run on a double by Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.).

In the sixth, Southern put up four runs to take an 8-3 lead. After the first three batters of the inning walked, Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to score Healy. Eng then hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bedryczuk. With two outs, Mason delivered again with a single that scored Gruttadauria and Sullivan and give the Owls a five-run lead.

Southern punctuated the day with a six-run eighth inning as Mason, Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Healy drove in a run each before Mason doubled to score Healy and Jagello with the two runs to force the Mercy Rule.

Southern is back in action on Monday, Mar. 13 when it takes on Molloy at 11 a.m. at Lynn University.

  • With a hit against Alliance, Mike Ferrett has now hit safely in nine-straight games.
  • Zach Bedryczuk and Andrew Eng are also riding six-game hitting streaks.
  • Eng and Connor Goggin have now reached base safely in all 12 of the Owls' games to date.
  • Eng and Derrick Jagello have driven in a run in the Owls last five games.
  • Zach Bedryczuk has a double in four-straight games and nine runs scored in his last five.  
  • For the year, Tyshaun Diaz now has 6 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings over four appearances to open the season.
  • Mason has three multiple-hit outings in his last four games in which he has also driven in 10 runs.
