SCSU Softball Falls To Shepherd, 2-1

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball dropped a hard-fought battle against Shepherd, 2-1, in their second meeting at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. With the loss, Southern dropped to 0-4 to open the year while Shepherd improved to 9-3 on the season.

Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) and Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) had the Owls' only two hits in the game, while Dumont drove in Samantha LaFemina (East Haddam, Conn.) with Southern's only run. On the mound, Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) went the distance and held the Rams to two runs while scattering five hits over six innings.

Perucki retired the first eight batters she faced before giving up a two out single in the third inning. Shepherd broke through in the fourth after a lead-off single and a triple accounted for the first run of the game. Perucki handled the Rams' lineup in the fifth, but Shepherd was able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, Roy led off with a single before LaFemina entered the game to run for the Owls' second baseman. After LaFemina moved to second on a passed ball, Dumont drove her in with a single and moved to second on the throw to the plate. Shepherd's Katie Laing then retired the final three batters of the game for the Owls.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 12 when it faces Alliance at 2 p.m. and Wayne State (Mich.) at 4:30 p.m. in Leesburg, Fla.
