SCSU Softball Tops Alliance, 9-0

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball picked up its first win of the season with a 9-0 victory against Alliance at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. The Owls improved to 1-4 on the season while Alliance dropped to 0-10 on the year.

Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) was dominant against Alliance to the tune of a six-inning shutout with 10 strikeouts and four hits allowed. Perucki gave up a two-out double in the first inning and then retired the next 11 batters she faced, including six by strikeout. At the plate, Rachel Miller (Wateford, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI while Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) also drove in three runs. Gabby Festa (Patchoge, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Southern got on the board in the second inning when Miller and Perucki both singled to lead off the inning before Gabby Festa (Patchogue, N.Y.) drove Miller home with a base hit. The Owls made it 4-0 with a three-run third inning. Petrella led of the inning with a walk before going to second on a single by Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.). Roy then drove in both runners with a single. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.)  singled to move Roy to third, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Miller to give the Owls a four-run lead.

The top of the sixth saw Southern push across five runs. Faith Barbieri (Wallingford, Conn.) pinch hit for Festa and doubled to set up the first run as she scored on a single by Angel Barresi. After Petrella and Lange followed with hits of their own, Roy hit a fly ball to center that scored Barresi. Dominique DeLutri (North Bellmore, N.Y.) got in on the hit parade with a single to score Petrella before Miller tripled home Dumont.

Alliance made it interesting with a one-out single and a two-out walk, but Perucki got the last batter to bounce one back to the mound for the final out.
