SCSU Softball Opens 2023 Season At The Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball opened the 2023 season at The Spring Game in Leesburg, Fla. on Friday, Mar. 10. The Owls, seeing the field for the first time this season, dropped the first game of a split doubleheader to Upper Iowa, 3-0, before its offense responded in the second game – a 12-9 loss to Shepherd.

Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) and Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) led the Owls' offense as Roy was 5-for-8 with a double, RBI and two runs scored while Dumont was 4-for-7 with a double, RBI and two runs scored as well. Gabby Festa (Patchogue, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs in the second game while Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI.

On the mound, Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) scattered eight hits over six innings against Upper Iowa and gave up three runs – two of which were earned, but the Owls ran into a buzzsaw and were limited to just four hits in a scoreless outing. In the second game, Emma Gorham (Ellington, Conn.) gave up two runs in three innings before Ashley Lewis (Columbia, Conn.) came on in relief to pitch the final two innings. Lewis gave up six runs, only two of which were earned in her first outing with the Owls.

Upper Iowa 3, SCSU 0
Against UIU, Lange and Roy were both 2-for-4. Perucki gave up two runs in the first and then tossed four shutout innings. The Owls' Ace retired seven straight before giving up a base hit in the fourth. She settled back into the groove and retired the next five hitters she faced.

Shepherd 12, SCSU 9
In the second game, it was Southern striking early as Tuscano drove in Dumont in the first inning to stake the Owls to a 1-0 lead. After Shepherd responded with a pair of runs in the second, Southern regained the lead with a three-run third inning. Roy started the rally with a leadoff single before Dumont and Tuscano walked to load the bases. Rachel Miller (Waterford, Conn.) then reached on a fielder's choice with Roy scoring before Festa delivered a two-run double to give the owls the lead.

Shepherd took control of the lead with a four-run fourth inning that preceded a five-run fifth. Trailing 11-4, Lewis came on in relief of Madison Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) in the fifth inning. Two errors in the inning proved costly for the Owls as Shepherd took a seven-run lead. In the sixth, Lewis retired the side before Southern responded with a three-run bottom half of the inning. Lange walked and Roy singled to start the inning before Dumont drove a single to left field to score Lange. Tuscano's ground ball to second was misplayed, allowing Roy to come around. Miller then reached on an error, with pinch runner Samantha LaFemina (East Haddam, Conn.) scoring on the play.

After Shepherd added another run in the top of the seventh, Southern attempted a rally in its final at-bats. Dominique DeLutri (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.) both walked to start the inning, before both runners moved up on a passed ball. Nadia Cestari (Naugatuck, Conn.) then hit a fly ball deep enough to left to score DeLutri with the sacrifice. Lange grounded out to move Barresi over before Roy drilled a single up the middle to plate another run, which proved to be all the Owls had left in the inning.

Southern is back in action at The Spring Games on Saturday, Mar. 11 when it faces Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Shepherd again.
