SCSU Softball's Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Indiana (Pa.)

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut's comeback bid against Indiana University (Pa.) fell short as the Owls dropped a non-conference matchup, 6-5, to the Crimson Hawks in Leesburg, Fla.

Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) also had two hits while Gabby Festa (Patchogue N.Y.) drove in two runs for the second straight game. Ashley Lewis (Columbia, Conn.) took the no-decision on the mound after she gave up five runs, only three of which were earned. Emma Gorham (Ellington, Conn.) pitched two innings of hitless, scoreless ball in relief.

In the first, Lange and Roy both singled to start the inning before the next two batters were retired. Festa then delivered a two-out single to score Lange and give Southern an early lead. IUP responded with four runs in the second and another in the third to jump out to a 5-1 lead. They made it 6-1 in the top of the fifth before Southern responded.

In the fifth, the Owls' first five batters of the inning reached base as Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.) started it off with a walk, but was retired on Ally Petrella's (Willington, Conn.) single to right field. Lange then drew a walk before Roy singled to load the bases. Dumont drove a single to center field to score two runs as the Owls cut the Hawks' lead to 6-3.

Gorham entered the game in the sixth inning and retired all three batters she faced. She retired the first two in the seventh, issued a walk and then got IUP's last batter to pop up. In the bottom half of the inning Lange drew her third walk of the game before Roy joined her on the bases with a walk of her own. Dumont was retired before Rachel Miller singled to score Lange and move Roy to third. Festa brought Roy home with a sacrifice fly before the Hawks were able to pitch out of the jam and pick up the win.
