Andrew Eng Homers Twice To Lead SCSU Baseball To 15-8 Win Against Molloy

BOCA RATON, FLA. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Molloy, 15-8, in a non-conference matchup at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, the Owls improved to 10-3 while also picking up a big regional victory as Molloy dropped to 8-7.

Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) homered twice for the Owls as part for a 3-for-5 day that saw the Owls' preseason All-American also drive in six runs in the win. Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) also blasted his third home run of the season as he went 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) also drove in two runs for the Owls.

Tommy Benincaso (Norwalk, Conn.) picked up the win for Southern after a five-inning outing that accounted for five runs – only three earned – on eight hits while striking out three. Peter Phillips (Simbury, Conn.) logged three innings in relief with three runs allowed on six hits while Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) pitched a hitless, scoreless ninth inning.

Eng's home run in the first inning, with Goggin sending one out two batters later, accounted for the Owls' first three runs of the game. Molloy chipped away with a run in the third and fourth innings. Leading, 3-2, Colin Mason singled with two outs before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Eng then singled home Mason to give Southern a 4-2 lead. Molloy would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning.

In the sixth, Goggin led off with a double and then went to third on a single by Derrick Jagello. Drewry then drove Goggin in with a base hit before Chad Fedeli bunted Jagello and Drewry into scoring position. Bedryczuk followed with a RBI single to score Drewry before Sullivan doubled down the line to score Drewry and Bedryczuk to give Southern an 8-4 lead.

Molloy bounced back with three unanswered runs to pull within a run, 8-7. Now getting into Molloy's bullpen, the Owls' offense erupted for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, keyed by a three-run homer for Eng while Drewry, Bedryczuk and Sullivan all drove in runs. Molloy put up another run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Owls hung on for the win.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 15 when it faces Post at 11 a.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
