SCSU Softball Falls To Wayne State, 11-3

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball lost to Wayne State, 11-3, at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. The loss dropped Southern Connecticut to 1-5 on the year while Wayne State improved to 4-7.

Jacqueline Dumont  was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI while Angela Barresi was 2-for-3. Errors plagued the Owls against the Warriors as only two of their 11 runs were earned. Emma Gorham was solid over 2 1/3 as all three runs against her were unearned, while Madison Shura was also plagued by five unearned runs in another solid outing. Ashley Lewis held the Warriors to two hits over two innings while striking out two.

After a three-run second inning by the Warriors, the Owls chipped away in the third. Ally Petrella led off with a single before Emily Lange walked. After Katrina Roy sacrificed both runners over, Dumont slammed a ground rule double to left center to push across Petrella and Lange to make it 3-2.

A pair of SCSU errors in the fourth led to four unearned runs as the Warriors scored seven to take a 10-2 lead. Lewis came on in relief in the fifth and despite giving up a hit, stranded two runners on base.

Facing the Mercy Rule in the fifth, Roy drew a one-out walk and then moved to second on a passed ball. Dumont then nuked another double to center field to score Roy to pull the Owls to within seven, 10-3.

The Warriors ended up getting the run back in the sixth when a two-out singled followed by the next batter reaching by error opened up the door for another run. With runners on second and third, the Warriors' 11th run crossed on a passed ball. The Owls threatened in the bottom half of the inning, as Dominique DeLutri and Barresi both singled before Wayne State retired the Owls' final two batters.

Southern is back in action on Monday, Mar. 13 when it faces Molloy at 9 a.m. and University of Mary at 11:30 a.m.
