SCSU Baseball Falls To Post, 9-4

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Post, 9-2, in a non-conference matchup in Miami Shores, Fla. The loss drops SCSU to 10-4 on the season while post improves to 8-11 for the year.

Josh Wettemann (Guilford, Conn.) hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season as the Owls attempted a late comeback. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck Conn.) and Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also drove in runs while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.), Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) and Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) also scored for the Owls.

Owls sophomore Brett Fee (North Branford, Conn.) was stellar in relief as held the Eagles to three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. Fee gave up the last run in a six-run first inning, and was also tagged for a run in the second, before quieting Post's lineup for the next four innings. After striking out the first two batters in the seventh, he gave up back to back singles followed by a triple before being lifted in favor of Aidan Ricciardelli (Branford, Conn.), who retired the next batter to get out of the inning.

Meanwhile the Owls plated a run in the fifth and sixth innings but ultimately couldn't solve Post's pitching. In the fifth, Goggin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a base hit by Jagello before Fedeli then drew a walk before Southern's next batter was retired for the second out of the inning. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) picked up a RBI after working a walk to force Goggin in.

In the sixth, Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) walked to lead off the inning, but was retired on a fielder's choice on a ball hit to third by Ferrett. After Ferrett took second base on a wild pitch, Goggin walked before Zack Healy (Enfield, Conn.) singled to load the bases. Jagello then hit a sacrifice fly to score Ferrett with Southern's second run of the game.

Ricciadelli finished the game for the Owls, holding Post scoreless while allowing one hit and striking out three over 2 1/3.

Southern and Post will meet against on Friday, Mar. 17 at 11 a.m. in Boca Raton, while the Owls will also face American International in a non-conference game on Thursday, Mar. 16.
