SCSU Softball Defeats University Of Mary, 20-8

LEESBURG, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball defeated University of Mary, 20-8, in a non-conference matchup at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. With the win, the Owls improved to 3-5 overall while Mary dropped to 2-11 on the year.

Jacqueline Dumont was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer to power the Owls' offense. Katrina Roy was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Nadia Cestari, in her first start with the Owls, was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Faith Barbieri also drove in two runs while scoring another. Emily Lange drove in two runs out of the top spot in the lineup while Ally Petrella was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Emma Gorham picked up the win for the Owls on the mound after pitching 3 1/3 and scattering five hits. Gorham gave up six unearned runs. All eight of University of Mary's runs were unearned in the game as five errors plagued the Owls' offense.

Southern capitalized on four walks in the first inning to push across three runs in its first at-bat. The second inning saw Petrella lead off with a single, followed by an RBI single by Roy before Dumont crushed a no-doubter to deep left field. The Owls put together a pair of two-out hits, followed by another single from Petrella, as they accounted for six runs in the second.

In the fourth, Southern keyed off an error on a ball hit by Faith Barbieri to get a rally started. Angela Barresi followed with a double, then Petrella walked to load the bases leading to a two-run single by Emily Lange as the Owls took an 11-run lead. Four errors in the bottom half of the inning by Southern allowed Mary to close the gap to 11-8.

In the sixth, Southern used 11 hits to score nine runs, with Dumont driving in a run as Gabby Festa had two hits in the inning. Paige Delier, Cestari, Barbieri, Lange and Roy all also drove in runs in the Owls' win.

Southern won both games on its fourth day of The Spring Games after defeating Molloy earlier in the day and have now won three of its last four games. The Owls wrap up their trip against University of Indianapolis and Saint Thomas Aquinas on Thursday, Mar. 16.
