SCSU Baseball Defeats American International, 8-6

BOCA RATON, FLA. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated American International, 8-6, in a non-conference matchup in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, the Owls improved to 11-4 overall while AIC dropped to 5-6 on the year.

Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.) picked up his fourth win of the season after hurling 6 2/3 innings in the start. Guarino allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out seven. Guarino has now won his last four starts. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) converted on his fourth save in as many opportunities while Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) gave up a single unearned run while holding AIC hitless over 1 1/3.

At the plate, Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a RBI while Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) drove in two runs and scored two more while Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) also had two hits each.

Southern scored in each of the first three innings with an Eng sacrifice fly scoring Bedryczuk with the game's first run. AIC scored once in the first inning before the Owls regained the lead in the top of the second. After Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) doubled, Fedeli drove him in to give Southern a 2-1 lead.

AIC responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. In the third, Bedryczuk singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. After moving to third on a wild pitch, he scored when Mike Ferrett's (Hamden, Conn.) groundball to third base was misplayed as the Owls tied the game at 3-3.

In the fifth, Eng reached on an error by AIC's second baseman followed by a walk by Ferrett. Goggin then doubled to score Eng and Ferrett scored on a wild pitch as the Owls took a 5-3 lead. The Owls made it 6-3 when Colin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) got on with a two-out single before Eng doubled him home to give Southern a three-run lead.

After AIC put up a run, Southern scored two more in the top of the ninth to take an 8-4 lead. Eng walked to lead off the inning before Ferrett reached on an error. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, with Jake Gruttadauria (Trumbull, Conn.) running for Ferrett. Goggin hit a sacrifice fly to score Eng before Gruttadauria scored on a wild pitch. Hughes came on after the first batter reached base in the ninth inning to strikeout two batters and nail down the save.

Southern is back in action on Friday, Mar. 17 when it takes on Post in Boca Raton, Fla.
