Tommy Benincaso Two-Hits AIC As SCSU Baseball Wins, 7-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated American International, 7-2, in a non-conference game in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, the Owls improved to 12-5 overall while AIC dropped to 5-8 on the year.

Tommy Benincaso (Norwalk, Conn.) was brilliant on the mound for the Owls as held the Yellowjackets to two runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits over eight innings. Benincaso struck out five as he picked up his third-straight win. At the dish, Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a double with a RBI and a run scored. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) also scored and drove in a run as part of a 2-for-4 day while Colin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) had a two-run single. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) also had a pair of hits for the Owls.

After giving up an unearned run in the second, Benincaso retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced through the sixth inning. Benincaso gave up a lead-off homer in the seventh, and then retired the next three batters and then pitched out of jam in the eighth to complete his day. Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) pitched a perfect ninth.

In the second inning, a walk and a passed ball set AIC to score the game's first run. Southern got on the board in the fourth inning when Ferrett led off with a single and then moved to third on a double by Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.). Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) then drove Ferrett home with a sacrifice fly ball to right field.

In the sixth, it was Ferrett starting the Owls' rally again after leading off with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a RBI single by Jagello. After Drewry and Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) both walked, Bedryczuk drove in Drewry with a single before Sullivan drove in Drewry with a base hit and Mason brought home Fedeli and Bedryczuk with a two-run single. Sullivan scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. AIC got a run back with a lead-off homer in the top of the seventh.

Southern will now return home to host Assumption for its Northeast 10 Conference opener on Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn.
