Guarino, Eng & Goggin Lead SCSU Baseball Past Assumption, 12-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Assumption, 12-2, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, the Owls improved to 13-5 overall and opened NE10 play at 1-0 while Assumption dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) was masterful over six innings on the mound, holding the Greyhounds to a single, unearned run, while giving up just three hits and striking out eight. At the plate, Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored while Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs while Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.

Guarino was the story of the day as he kept the Greyhounds off-balance all afternoon. After giving up a two-out single in the first, Guarino retired the next seven batters he faced before giving up a lead-off single in the fourth. He then sat down the next six batters he faced, three by strikeout. Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season. Phillips gave up an unearned run on two hits.

Southern's first run came in the fourth inning after a pair of errors before Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) drove in Eng with two outs to give Southern a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) walked to lead off the inning before Eng crushed a no-doubter over the right field wall to give Southern a 4-0 lead. Assumption got a run back in the sixth when the lead off batter reached on an error and then scored two batters later.

In the sixth, Jagello walked and then moved over to third on a pair of passed balls before Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) drove him in with a single. The Owls' big inning came in the seventh when they scored six runs, highlighted by Goggin's three-run laser over the scoreboard in left field on the first pitch of his at-bat before Fedeli drove in a pair of runners with a single. Sullivan also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Owls plated their 12th run in their final at-bat. Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) had a two-out, pinch-hit single up the middle and Jagello walked before pinch hitter Zack Healy (Enfield, Conn.) lined a single to center field to score Walker.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 22 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International.
