SCSU Baseball Cruises To 21-13 Win Against AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut baseball won a marathon game that ended in the eighth inning due to darkness as the Owls rolled to a 21-13 win at American International. With the win, Southern improved to 14-5 overall and 2-0 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

In a game that saw Southern Connecticut score 21 runs on 26 hits, Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) collected five this while driving in five runs and scoring four more. Addition, Sullivan missed the cycle by a home run, while collecting two doubles. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with three doubles and five RBI while Colin Mason (Flemington, N.J.) was 4-for-6 with four RBI. Additionally, Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) homered for the second-straight game to give him five for the year as he drove in three runs. Chad Fedeli (Monre, Conn.) also collected four hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.

Southern scored five runs in the third inning to erase an early 1-0 AIC lead, with Mason driving in two runs and Jagello pushing across three more. AIC got a run back in the bottom half of the inning before Southern responded with a four-run fourth, a six-run fifth and a five-run sixth inning to take a 20-7 lead. The Owls added another run in the seventh, while AIC scored two runs in each of the final three innings.

In the fourth, Mason drove in Fedeli before Mike Ferrett doubled to bring home Eng and Sullivan. Connor Goggin collected a RBI single as the Owls took a 9-2 lead. In the fifth, Sullivan drove in a pair of runs with a double, followed by a RBI double by Mason. Ferrett singled home a run before Jagello drove in Goggin and Ferrett with a double to give Southern a 15-3 lead.

After AIC started to chip away at the Owls lead, Sullivan blasted a two-run triple to make it 17-7 before Eng connected for home run No. 5 on the year, a three-run laser, to give Southern a 20-7 lead.

Southern is idle this weekend and is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 28 when it hosts AIC at 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
