SCSU Baseball Downs American International, 7-5

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated American International, 7-5, in a non-conference matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, the Owls completed the four-game season sweep of the Yellow Jackets and improved to 15-5 on the year while AIC dropped to 5-14 on the season.

SCSU Baseball Highlights vs. American International (Mar. 28, 2023)

Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) won his sixth-straight start after a brilliant six-inning performance against AIC. Guarino gave up seven hits while striking out seven and gave up a solo home run for the only run against him for the day. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with three RBI while Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) drove in two runs. Billy Sullivan (Village Cottage, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored.

Guarino retired AIC in order to start the game and then got into a little trouble in the second inning. AIC strung together three hits before he struck out the last two batters he faced in the inning. AIC's Jackson Haker connected for a two-out solo homer in the third, which was the lone run against AIC for the day. From there, Guarino allowed three batters to reach base.

AIC kept Southern off balance through the first four innings. In the fifth, Sullivan worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Colin Mason. After Eng flew out, Ferrett sent a laser to the left-center field gap for a double to plated two runs and gave Southern a 2-1 lead. Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) then sent a shot to dead-center field for a triple that bround Ferrett home and gave the Owls a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth, Chad Fedeli was hit by a pitch and then went to second on a walk by Sullivan. After Mason walked to load the bases to Eng, the Owls' center fielder jumped on a pitch on the outside corner and single the opposite way to score Fedeli and Sullivan.

After Tommy Benincaso pitched a scoreless eighth inning, that saw the Owls' pitcher strike out two batters in the inning, Southern went to closer Tommy Hughes for the two-inning save with a four-run lead. Hughes gave up a two-out, two run homer in the eighth as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two runs. In the ninth, Hughes struck out the lead off batter, then walked a batter, gave up a single before hitting the next batter with a pitch. After a catcher's interference call resulted in another run, a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and a strike out ended the game.
