SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Post

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut softball split a non-conference doubleheader against Post, losing the first game, 6-4, before bouncing back with a 6-1 win in the second game. Southern improved to 4-8 on the year while Post moves to 2-16 on the season.

Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) made an appearance in both ends of the doubleheader as she entered into the first game and logged 1 2/3 of scoreless softball while holding the Eagles hitless and striking out five. She got the start in the second game and picked up the win after holding Post to a single run on five hits while striking out eight.  At the plate, Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) was 3-for-6 with three RBI in the doubleheader while also hitting her third home run of the season in the night cap.

In the first game, Southern put together a two-run second inning while rattling off three hits. Dominique DeLutri led off with a single before Faith Barbieri reached on an error. Angela Barresi then drove in DeLutri with a single. Barresi scored Southern's second run when she stole home.

In the fourth, Post put together a three-run rally to take a 3-2 lead before the Owls got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by Dumont that scored Emily Lange. In the sixth, Post jumped on the Owls' pitcher with three doubles that accounted for three runs in a 6-3 Eagles' win.

In the second game, Southern took an early lead when Lange walked to lead off the game. After Katrina Roy bunted her over, Lange moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dumont.

From their, neither offense could get much going as Perucki dominated on the mound, pitching out of multiple jams to preserve the Owls' lead. Southern finally broke through with a five-run sixth inning. Dumont led off the inning with a no-doubter over the left field wall to give Southern a 2-0 lead. After Perucki singled to help her own cause, Barbieri pinch ran and stole second base. Gabby Festa then doubled to score Barbieri, with Samantha LaFemina entering the game to run for Festa. DeLutri then drove in LaFemina before Nadine Cestari blasted a double to the base of the left field wall to score DeLutri. Roy then drove in Cestari to give Southern the 6-1 lead.

The Owls return to action on Friday, Mar. 24 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a Northeast 10 doubleheader at 3 p.m.
