SCSU Softball Splits With Assumption; Perucki Homers, Strikes Out 12 In Extra-Inning Win

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut softball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at Assumption, winning the first game, 4-1 in 10 innings, before dropping the nightcap, 7-5. The Owls go to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the NE10 while Assumption is now 8-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Owls received another gem from starter Jessica Perucki. Perucki went the distance in the first game. The Owls hurler struck out 12 in 10 innings while holding Assumption to a single run. At the plate, Perucki connected for her second home run of the season – a two-run shot that gave the Owls a three-run lead in their final at-bat. Perucki gave up just three hits in the game. In the first game, Katrina Roy was 2-for-5 and drove in the Owls' go-ahead run in the 10th while Dominique DeLutri also drove in a run in both games. In the second game, Paige Delier was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Ally Petrella drove in two runs in the nightcap.

In the first game, both teams were hitless through the third inning. In the fourth, Perucki helped her own cause with a lead-off walk before Faith Barbieri came in to run for the Owls' hurler. Rachel Miller then broke-up the Greyhounds' no-hitter with a single that moved Barbieri to third. Dominique DeLutri then broke in the Owls' first run with a sacrifice fly that scored Barbieri. In the bottom of the inning, Assumption led off with a triple before a base hit scored the tying run.

Meanwhile, Perucki continued to dominate on the mound, mowing down Assumption batters. In the top of the 10th, Ally Petrella was placed on second to start the inning and then moved to third on a passed ball. After Emily Lange ground out, Katrina Roy singled to left field to score Petrella with the go-ahead run. After Jacqueline Dumont followed with a pop-out, Perucki once-again helped her cause with a two-run blast over the left field wall to give Southern a 4-1 lead.

In the second game, Southern broke through in the sixth inning to break-up Assumption's shutout bid. Emily Lange walked to lead off the inning before Dumont was hit by a pitch. After Miller walked, Paige Delier drove in two runs with a double before DeLutri drove in a run to make it 7-3. After Angela Barresi walked, Ally Petrella's base hit drove in Gabby Festa and Delier to cut Assumption's lead to 7-5.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 25 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International College in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader set for a 12:30 p.m. start.
