SCSU Baseball Defeats Assumption, 15-7

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Assumption, 15-7, for its fourth-straight win to improve to 16-5 on the year. With the loss Assumption dropped to 7-14 for the season, while the Owls have won both matchups between the two teams for the year.

SCSU Baseball Highlights vs. Queens (Mar. 29, 2023)

Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) ran his streak of at-bats in which he reached base to 14 before being retired in his fifth appearance of the game. Sullivan was 2-for-5 with a double, stolen base, two RBI and three runs scored. Colin Mason (Flemington, Conn.) was 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.), Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) and Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) all drove in two runs. Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with two walks, a RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) improved to 2-2 on the season after six strong innings that saw the Owls' southpaw give up one earned run one eight hits while striking out six. Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) logged a perfect ninth inning.

Southern wasted no time in putting runs on the board when it scored four in its first at-bat. Eng drove in Sullivan with the game's first run before Goggin followed with a two-run single that scored Eng and Mason. Drewry then doubled to score Goggin as the Owls took a 4-0 lead.

In the third, Assumption tied the game with three unearned runs, which were all delivered on a two-run homer after an error extended the inning. Southern got the runs back, twice, with an eight-run fourth inning. Sullivan drove in two runs with a double before Mason's double scored Sullivan. Ferrett then drove in Mason before Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and Drewry and Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) both walked to force in runs.

Leading 12-4, Southern added two more runs in the fifth as Ferrett drove in Eng before he moved to third and scored on a passed ball. Assumption got three runs back in the seventh before Mason drove in Sullivan in in the eighth. Phillips entered with an eight-run lead, 15-7, and shut down the Greyhounds' offense.

Southern is back in action on Friday, Mar. 31 when it hosts Queens for a non-conference with regional implications at 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU. Southern and Queens will also play a doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 2 in Flushing, N.Y.
