SCSU Baseball Falls To Queens, 4-3, In 10 Innings

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Queens, 4-3 in extra innings, in a non-conference matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the loss, Southern dropped to 16-6 overall while Queens improved to 16-5.

Mike Szturma (Beacon Falls, Conn.) was impressive on the mound for the Owls as he held the Knights to one earned run while scattering eight hits over six innings and striking out eight. Queens scored three runs total against the Owls' starter, two of which were unearned. His lone blemish of the day was a lead-off home run in the fifth. At the plate, Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-4 and drove in Colin Mason with the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) also recorded two hits.

Southern got on the board first when it scored twice in the second inning. After Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) walked to lead off the inning, Goggin singled to move Ferrett to second. Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) then dropped down the sacrifice bunt, but the throw to third to attempt to retire Ferrett was off line and allowed Ferrett to score. With Goggin on third, Jack Drewry hit a laser to first that was snared for the first out of the inning before Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) hit a deep flyball to right field to score Goggin and give Southern a 2-0 lead.

Szturma was crafty on the mound throughout his outing. In the first, the first two batters got on base before he struck out the next three batters in the inning. He then got the lead-off batter in the second and third inning, with the second batter in each inning reaching on a single. In both instances, he got his groundball and the Owls turned two to silence the Queens' threat. He finished his day with a pair of strikeouts that book-ended a 1-2-3 inning.

Matt Smith (South Windsor, Conn.) came on in relief of Szturma in the seventh and held Queens scoreless over three innings. In the bottom of the ninth, trailing by a run, Queens went to its closer. Mason walked on five pitches to start the inning before stealing second. After Andrew Eng struck out and Ferrett popped up behind the plate, the Owls were down to their final out before Goggin lined a single through the left side of the infield to score Mason from second and tie the game at 3-3.

In the 10th, Smith retired the first batter of the inning before giving up a hit and then getting the second out. He struck out the next batter, but the swinging strike got away from the catcher, allowing Queens' batter to reach first and give the Knights another life. Smith walked the next batter to load the bases before Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) came in to relieve Smith. A hit batter forced the go-ahead run in before Hughes retired the next batter.

In the bottom half of the inning, Bedryczuk singled with two outs and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Queens was able to retire the final batter and close-out the win.
Southern and Queens will meet against for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 2 in Flushing, N.Y.
