Andrew Eng Homers Four Times In First Game Of Doubleheader Split At Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) homered four times in the first game of the Owls' non-conference doubleheader at Queens. Southern split the doubleheader with Queens taking the first game, 17-10, before the Owls won 9-6 in extra innings in the second game. Southern goes to 17-7 overall while Queens is now 17-6.

In addition to becoming the first player in Southern Connecticut history to hit four home runs in a game, he is just the second player in NE10 Conference history to do it and the 32nd player in NCAA Division II history to accomplish the feat. The last NE10 player to homer four times in a game was Saint Anselm's Eric Kraut on Apr. 29, 1994 against Assumption.

In the first game, In addition to Eng's four-homer day, Billy Sullivan and Colin Mason also homered for the Owls. Sullivan was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored while Mason was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Mike Ferrett was 2-for-4 while Jack Drewry also drove in a run.

In the first, Connor Goggin led off with a single and then stole second before scoring on a single by Drewry to give Southern an early lead. It was short lived as Queens scored seven in the bottom half of the inning.

Southern chipped away and tied the game with a two-run third inning and four runs in the fourth. In the third, Sullivan led off with a home run to left center field before Mason popped up. Eng then followed with his team-leading fifth homer of the year.

In the fourth, Chad Fedeli singled and Sullivan walked before Mason connected for a two-out, three-run home run to make it 7-6 before Eng connected for his second dinger of the day to tie the game at 7-7. Queens got two runs back in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-7 and then took a three-run lead, 10-7, in the fifth.

In the sixth, Eng ripped his third home run of the day to cut Queens' lead to 10-8. Ferrett then followed with a double before he scored on a failed pick-off throw against Derrick Jagello to pull the Owls within a run, 10-9. Queens continued to build on its lead with a three-run sixth inning and four-run seventh. In the eighth, it was Eng again, turning on the first pitch of the at-bat for his fourth home run of the game.

In the second game, Southern came out swinging with a four-run first inning. Sullivan and Mason both singled before Eng walked to load the bases. Ferrett followed with a double to score Sullivan and Mason before Goggin doubled to score Eng and Ferrett and give Southern a 4-0 lead. The Owls made it 5-0 when Ferrett singled home Mason in the second.

Queens tied the game with a five-run second inning. The Owls regained the lead in the sixth. Zack Healey worked a five-pitch walk and then stole second. With two outs, Zach Bedryczuk doubled to left center to score Healey and give the Owls a 6-5 lead. Queens tied it back up in the bottom of the fifth after they took advantage of a lead off double to knot the game at 6-6.

In the eighth, of a scheduled seven-inning game, Sullivan and Mason were both retired to lead off the inning. Eng was then hit by a pitch before Ferrett singled through the left side of the infield. Goggin walked to load the bases before Jagello's single through the left side of the infield scored Eng and an error on the play allowed Ferrett to come home as well. Healey then singled through the left side of the infield to plate Goggin and give Southern a 9-6 lead.

Hughes, working his second inning in relief retired the side to give the Owls the win, and pick up his first victory of the season.
