SCSU Baseball Tops Mercy In Home Opener, 6-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Mercy, 6-1, in its first home contest of the 2023 season at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, Southern improved to 7-2 overall while Mercy dropped to 2-11.

First-year Owl and graduate transfer Colin Mason (Fleminton, N.J.) led the Owls with a 3-for-4 day including two doubles and two runs scored. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) also had two doubles while Derrick Jagello (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. On the mound, Tommy Benincaso (Norwalk Conn.), another graduate transfer, picked up his first win with Southern Connecticut after holding Mercy to one run on seven hits over five innings while striking out three. Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) and Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) both pitched two scoreless innings in relief, while Diaz struck out two and Phillips retired all six batters he faced.

Southern got on the board in their first at-bat as Mason singled before scoring from first on a double by Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.). Mercy manufactured a run in the top of the second, but it was the lone blemish in a shut-down performance by Benincaso. After the second, he allowed just three baserunners over his final three innings of work.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning, Zach Bedryczuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) poked a one-out double down the left field line and then came around to score when Mason delivered a two-out double to the right field corner to give Southern a 2-1 lead.

Diaz entered in the top of the sixth inning and retired Mercy in order. In the bottom of the sixth, Ferrett led off with the first of his two doubles and then came around to score on a single by Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.). After Goggin went from first to third on a throwing error by Mercy's shortstop, Jagello drove him in. With runners on first and second, Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) bunted both runners over and Bedrczyk walked to load the bases. Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) came home on a wild pitch and Mason hit a sacrifice fly to score Jagello and give Southern a 6-1 lead.

In the seventh, Diaz retired the first batter of the inning before the next two hitters reached base. Diaz got Mercy's Nolan Giblin to line out and then struck out Gabe Sanders to end the threat. Phillips entered the game in the eighth inning and retired all six batters he faced to end the game.

Southern will now travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for an eight-game, Spring Break road trip from Mar. 11-18. Southern will return home on Tuesday, Apr. 21 to host Assumption at 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
