SCSU Women's Lacrosse Falls To No. 22 Bentley In NE10 Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse was dealt its first loss of the season, falling to No. 22 Bentley, 15-7, in Waltham, Mass. With the loss, Southern drops to 2-1 overall while it opens Northeast 10 Conference play at 0-1. Bentley improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) led the Owls with three points on a goal and two assists while Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) and Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) both scored twice for the Owls. Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.) finished with a goal and an assist. Shaw also had two draw controls and caused two turnovers while Hannah Holmes (Colchester, Conn.) led the Owls with four ground balls. Michaela Rutigliano (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) also caused three turnovers to lead Southern while also totaling three ground balls. In goal, freshman Caelan Connors (Holbrook, N.Y.) had 11 saves.

Southern held an early lead, 2-1, on goals by Rowe and Takacs, before the Falcons rattled off three-straight markers. Feinberg's first goal of the game cut into Bentley's lead, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second, Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Takacs to tie the game at 4-4 with 13:32 to go. Bentley controlled play for the remainder of the second quarter and rolled into halftime on a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw only a single goal scored between the two teams as Bentley's Maeve Johnson gave the Falcons a 9-5 lead. Johnson was a problem for the Owls all afternoon on her way to a six-goal, four-assist showing. Down the stretch, Bentley outscored the Owls, 6-2, in the fourth quarter with Shaw and Feinberg finding the back of the net for Southern Connecticut.

Southern will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Mar. 8 when it hosts Caldwell at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. The Owls will then host Saint Anselm on Saturday, Mar. 11 for a NE10 matchup set for a 1 p.m. start at home.
