SCSU Women’s Lacrosse Victorious Over Caldwell, 20-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse beat Caldwell in a 20-3 non-conference win in New Haven, Conn. on Mar. 8, 2023. The Owls rise to 3-1 on the season while Caldwell drops to 0-2.

Kirsten McIntire (Nashua, N.H.) scored a team-high four goals in the win off of five shots on goal. Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.), Alexandra Ruel (Ivoryton, Conn.), Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and Allie Palmer (Fairfield, Conn.) each scored two goals apiece for the Owls. Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.), Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.), Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.), Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Amelia Mansfield (Yalesville, Conn.), Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.), Gabriella Smith (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Olivia Richter (Holbrook, N.Y.) each tabbed in a goal. The last time the Owls hit the 20-goal mark was in 2018 when Southern Connecticut faced Southern New Hampshire in a 21-19 victory. Takacs led the team in assists with three. Maggie Kallinich led the team in ground balls (3) and also in caused turnovers (4).

In the first period alone, the Owls outscored the Cougars, 8-0, off of 14 shots on goal. The scoring began just two minutes into the game when Takacs notched her lone goal of the game. McIntire followed in similar fashion when she scored a mere 20 seconds later. McIntire notched three goals in the first period, including one goal with only three seconds remaining. Morgan Reilly scored both of her two goals during the first nine minutes of the game. Kelly Jagodzinski and Brianna Shaw rounded out the final scorers in the first period each with one goal.

The Owls scored five goals in the second period with Caldwell limited to only one goal. McIntire scored her fourth and final goal of the game in the opening minute of the second period off an assist by Takacs. Feinberg and Rowe each scored a goal before the Cougars responded with a goal of their own. Palmer scored her two goals of the game within the last five minutes of the period. At halftime, it was 13-1.

A repeat of the second period, the Owls scored an additional five goals in the third period. Five different Owls scored: Mansfield, Smith, Feinberg, Robbins and Ruel. Feinberg scored her second goal of the game in the third period, while the Owls continued to limit Caldwell's chances by allowing only one shot from the Cougars.  

Alexandra Ruel finished off her scoring with her second goal at the beginning of the fourth period, with Olivia Richter following just minutes later. The Owls conceded two goals in the final six minutes to close the game at 20-3.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1:00 p.m. when the Owls host Saint Anselm in New Haven, Conn. at Jess Dow Field.
