SCSU Women's Lacrosse Dealt 15-8 Loss By No. 25 Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost to No. 25 Saint Anselm, 15-8, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, Southern dropped to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in NE10 play while Saint Anselm improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the NE10.

Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) led the Owls with three points on two goals and an assist while also totaling six draw controls and causing two turnovers. Shaw was 2-for-2 on free-position shots in the game. Alexandra Ruel () scored twice for the Owls while Karlie Rowe and Bayleigh Takacs both had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Caelan Connors () stopped 13 shots in goal.

Southern was ultimately doomed by a six-goal second quarter by the Hawks which stood out as the deciding factor of the game. The Owls answered a pair of game-opening goals by Saint Anselm with markers from Kirsten McIntire and Kelly Jagodzinski to tie at 2-2 early on before the Hawks scored again with just over a minute to play in the first frame.

Leading 3-2 to start the second quarter, Saint Anselm scored six unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead into halftime. Ruel broke through in the opening minute of the third quarter, but Saint A's ran-off three-straight goals to push its lead to 12-4. The final three minutes of the quarter saw both teams trade goals, with Shaw and Takacs scoring for the Owls, as Saint Anselm held a 14-5 edge heading into the final period.

The Owls would win the final period, outscoring Saint Anselm, 3-1, with Shaw and Ruel scoring their second goals of the game before Rowe found the back of the net.
Southern will travel to Savannah, Ga. for Spring Break to face Saint Michael's on Wednesday, Mar. 15 and the Savannah College of Arts and Design on Friday, Mar. 17.
