SCSU Baseball Highlights vs. New Haven (Apr. 14, 2023)

Ferrett's grand slam was the difference in the Owls' victory. For the day, he was 2-for-4. Andrew Eng was 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Colin Mason also had a two-hit day with two runs scored. Chad Fedeli added a double and a run scored. On the mound, Peter Phillips picked up the win in relief after holding New Haven to one unearned run on one hit over 3 1/3. Mike Szturma took the no-decision after working 4 1/3 to start the game, while Tommy Hughes converted his seventh save of the season after pitching the final 1 1/3.

In the 3rd inning, Fedeli led off the inning with a double before the next two batters were retired. Mason then bounced a base hit up the middle to extend the inning before Eng hit a laser over the head of the center field to score two runs. The center fielder overthrew the cutoff man as the ball bounced past the third baseman. With the base empty, Eng moved to third and then snuck home to tie the game at 3-3.

In the 5th, Zach Bedryczuk singled with one out before being retired on a groundball to short by Billy Sullivan. Mason then hit a dribbler to third base and hustled to beat the throw at first for a single. After Eng walk, Ferrett jumped on the first pitch that he saw of his at-bat and crushed a grand slam over the scoreboard in left field to break the 3-3 tie and give Southern a four-run lead.

New Haven chipped away, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but Philips and Hughes were in control for the second half of the game. For Ferrett, he bounced back from a hitless showing in his last outing after a 10-game hitting streak. In his last 12 games, Ferrett is 21-for-48 (.438) with 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. With three RBI against the Chargers, Eng now has 12 multiple-RBI games this season and a team-high 39 for the year.

On the mound, Phillips dominated after relieving Szturma. The Owls' righty retired the first five batters he faced, and then worked out of a jam when the first two batters in the 7th inning reached base. After getting two outs in the 8th, New Haven put a couple runners on base to signal Hughes, the Owls' closer. Hughes worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th and then retired the final two UNH batters of the game with the tying run on base.

Southern and New Haven will meet again on Saturday, Mar. 15 for a pair of seven-inning games at 12 p.m. at Vieira Field in West Haven, and conclude their four-game series on Sunday, Mar. 16 at 12 p.m. in West Haven.
