SCSU Baseball Tops New Haven, 4-3, To Win Series

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated New Haven, 4-3, in the fourth and final game of its Northeast 10 Conference regular-season series against the Chargers. Southern won the first two games of the series, and lost the back-end of a doubleheader, before responding with a win in the final game. Southern improved to 24-8 overall and 7-1 in the NE10 while New Haven dropped to 21-9 overall and 7-5 in conference action.

SCSU Baseball Wins Series Against New Haven With 4-3 Win

Mike Ferrett continued to excel against the Chargers, this time going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. In the four game series, Ferrett hit .533 (8-for-15) with a home run, two doubles, nine RBI and three runs scored.  Izaiah Walker and Zach Bedryczuk also drove in runs in the Owls' 4-3 win against UNH while Jack Drewry and Andrew Eng were both 1-for-4 with a run scored.

On the mound, Tommy Benincaso was brilliant as he gave up just one earned runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out six. Benincaso gave up a triple to the first batter of the day, who eventually scored, and then blanked New Haven over the next two innings. Two unearned runs crossed in the 4th inning before Benincaso settled in an retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. After retiring the final batter he would face to end the 7th, he was relieved by Matt Smith who retired all six batters he faced to slam the door on the Chargers.

After New Haven scored in the 1st, Southern responded in their next at-bat. Drewry and Derrick Jagello strung together back-to-back one-out singles before Bedryczuk drove in Drewry with a two-out double to knot the game at 1-1. In the 3rd, Southern took the lead when Ferrett followed a base hit by Eng with a double that scored Eng from first. Ferrett then moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on another to give Southern a 3-1 lead.

In the 4th, Billy Sullivan reached on an error with two outs and moved to second base. Walker then singled to left field to score Sullivan and give the Owls a 4-1 lead.

Southern returns home on Saturday, Apr. 22 to host Saint Rose in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU at 12 p.m. The Owls will host Games No. 3 and 4 on Sunday, Apr. 23.
