SCSU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Saint Rose

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball swept the first two games of its Northeast 10 Conference series against Saint Rose, 4-3 and 9-3, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the two wins, the Owls improved to 26-8 overall and 9-1 in the NE10 while Saint Rose dropped to 12-18 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Chad Fedeli was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored in the twin bill while Billy Sullivan was 3-for-9 with two RBI. Colin Mason also had two hits in the doubleheader while Andrew Eng drove in a run in both games. In the second game, Zach Bedryczuk was 3-for-3 with two Rbi and two runs scored.

On the mound, Mike Szturma took a no-decision in the first game after striking out a season-high 12 batters over seven innings while giving up two runs and six hits. Szturma gave up both runs in the first inning before settling in an pitching six shutout innings. He gave way to Peter Phillips who pitched the 8th that saw him give up an unearned run before Tommy Hughes came in to pitch a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season.

In the second game, Nick Guarino improved to 8-1 on the year after holding Saint Rose to one run over six innings while giving up six hits. Spencer Fox pitched the ninth and gave up two runs on one hit while striking out three.

In the first game, after Szturma gave up a two-run homer to Jack McDonald, Southern got a run back in the 2nd inning. Connor Goggin walked and stole second to lead-off the inning before Jack Drewry and Derrick Jagello were retired. Fedeli then singled to right field to score Goggin and cut the Golden Knights' lead in half, 2-1.

In the 7th, Eng worked a two-out walk and then moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Mike Ferrett then singled to left field to score Eng and tie the game at 2-2. Saint Rose got a run back to retake the lead, 3-2, in the top of the 8th on an unearned run. In the bottom half of the inning, Drewry led off with a single to center, and was then pinch ran for by Zakary Droukas. Jagello then singled to move Droukas to second before Fedeli walked to load the bases. After the next batter was retired, Sullivan drove in Droukas with a single to center field to tie the game at 3-3. Colin Mason then struck out before Eng was hit by a pitch to force in Jagello with the go-ahead run. Hughes gave up a lead-off single in the ninth before retiring the final three batters.

In the second game, Southern struck early with two runs in the 2nd inning. Jagello lead off with a single before Fedeli bunted him over. Bedryczuk then singled to left but an error on the throw to third allowed Jagello to score and Bedryczuk to move to third. Sullivan drove him in with a bunt single to give Southern a 2-0 lead. The Owls made it 3-0 in the 4th when Fedeli singled and stole second to start the inning before scoring on a base hit by Bedryczuk.

In the fifth, the Owls capitalized on two Saint Rose errors to push six runs across. Ferrett reached on an error before Goggin walked. Drewry then reached on a fielder's choice but an error by Saint Rose's catcher allowed Ferrett to score on the play. After Jagello was retired, Fedeli drove in Goggin and Drewry with a single, followed by a base hit by Bedryczuk that moved Fedeli to second. Sullivan delivered a single to center to score Fedeli before Mason singled to score Bedryczuk and Eng hit a sacrifice fly to score Sullivan and give Southern a 9-0 lead.

Guarino maneuvered through the Saint Rose lineup masterfully and held the Golden Knights scoreless through five innings. In the 6th, Saint Rose plated their only run off the Owls' Southpaw. Fox then pitched the top of the 7th and secured the win for the Owls.

Southern and Saint Rose will play the final two games of their four-game set on Monday, Apr. 24 at 12 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
