SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Saint Rose

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against College of Saint Rose, winning the first game, 6-3, before Saint Rose won the second game, 12-7. Southern moved to 27-9 overall and 10-2 in the NE10 while Saint Rose is now 13-19 overall and 3-10 in conference play.

Andrew Eng was 2-for-6 with a home run and four RBI for the twin bill while Colin Mason was 3-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in the nightcap while Billy Sullivan and Zach Bedryczuk both collected three hits in the doubleheader. Steve Phillips picked up the win in the first game after giving up two earned runs on five hits over 5 2/3 to improve to 4-3 on the year while Tommy Hughes held Saint Rose scoreless over 1 1/3 while striking out two for his ninth save.

In the first game, Saint Rose scored twice in the top of the 1st inning, with only one run earned, to take an early lead. The Owls got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd when Billy Sullivan doubled to lead-off the inning before going to third on a passed ball. Colin Mason's ground ball to short allowed Sullivan to score and cut the Golden Knights' lead in half, 2-1.

In the 5th, Bedryczuk reached on an error to start the inning before going to second on a base hit by Sullivan. Mason then dropped down a bunt and beat the throw to first to load the bases. Eng worked a walk to force Bedryczuk in with the game-tying run. Mike Ferrett then hit a ground ball to second that was misplayed, allowing Sullivan and Mason to score to give the Owls a 4-2 lead. Connor Goggin then drove in Eng with a ground ball to third and Ferrett scored on a base hit by Derrick Jagello to give Southern a 6-2 lead.

In the second game, Sullivan led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and then stole second base. Mason then reached on an error with Sullivan going to third. Eng put the ball in play scoring Sullivan before Ferrett drove in Mason to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Saint Rose struck for three runs in the top of the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Jack Drewry led off with a single down the right field line and then went to second on a passed ball. Chad Fedeli dropped down a bunt for a single, but the throw was off-line allowing Drewry to score and tie the game at 3-3. After the next two batters were retired, Mason singled through the right side of the infield to score Fedeli and give the Owls the lead. After Mason stole second, Eng got into one and blasted his 11th home run of the season to give Southern a 6-3 lead. Saint Rose got a run back off a solo home run in the next inning.

In the 6th, Saint Rose put together a rally that resulted in four runs to take a 8-6 lead, and then added two more in the top of the 7th. Fedeli's first home run of the season to lead-off the 8th pulled the Owls within three runs, 10-7, but would cap their offensive production for the day.

Despite the loss in the final game of the series, the Owls win their third-straight series of the season after sweeping Le Moyne and taking three-of-four against New Haven. The Owls will host Pace on Apr. 29-30 before traveling to Adelphi to finish the regular season.
