SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against Pace

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 24 Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Pace, losing the first game, 4-2, before bouncing back with a 4-1 win in the nightcap. Southern improved to 28-10 overall and 11-3 in the NE10 while Pace went to 25-16 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

In the first game, Jack Drewry was 2-for-4 while Billy Sullivan and Andrew Eng scored both of the Owls' runs. Mike Szturma turned into another gutsy performance and took the hard-luck loss after an error accounted for two unearned runs in a two-run game. Szturma scattered six hits over 6 1/3 while striking out six.

In the second game, Connor Goggin launched his seventh home run of the season while Chad Fedeli was 2-for-2 with a RBI and Derrick Jagello also drove in a run for the Owls. Nick Guarino improved to 9-1 on the season after holding Pace to a single run on six hits while striking out five over six innings. Tommy Hughes came on to pitch the 7th inning and converted his 10th save of the season, which stands as the second-most in a single season in program history and the most since Mike Johnston had 16 in 2011.

Guarnio is also tied for third with nine wins, which also matches his 2022 total. He trails Kevin Pettine and Chris Zbin who both won 10 games in 2011 for the single-season record. His 18 career wins place him 10th all-time, trailing Cole Bryant's 20 career wins from 2012-17 for ninth place.

In the first game, Southern took an early lead when Billy Sullivan singled on the first pitch of bottom of the 1st inning. He went to second on Colin Mason's ground-out and third on a fly ball to right by Andrew Eng before scoring on a wild pitch. Meanwhile, Szturma was locked in as he held Pace scoreless for 5 2/3. After a pair of walks in the top of the 6th, and two outs, he gave up back-to-back hits to score two runs as Pace took a 2-1 lead. After a walk, a dropped pop-up by the Owls' infield, which would have ended the inning, let two runs come around to score as Pace took a 4-1 lead. The Owls scored another run in the bottom of the 8th.

In the second game, Goggin jumped on a pitch and blasted a solo shot over the left field wall to put Southern on the board. After a strike out, Drewry walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Fedeli's followed with a single to left field that was juggled, allowing Drewry to score and give Southern a 2-0 lead. Southern made it 3-0 in the 3rd when Jagello's sacrifice fly scored Mason, who reached on an error.

Pace got a run back in the top of the 5th with a two-out home run, but Guarino settled back in and retired the last four batters he faced before Hughes took over in the seventh.
